Strange fruit shop design

Arranged on 2 levels, the 420 m² store is designed to be a complex system that works with oppositional concepts of openness/confidentiality, visibility/invisibility, and exposure/concealment.

Situated at a corner of Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt, Strange Fruit stakes a place within an established high-class fashion district; The Corner Berlin, Gendarmenmarkt, was designed by Gonzalez Haase AAS in 2006. Strange Fruit presents emerging fashion designers like Gaspard Yurkievich, Jonathan Saunders and Petar Petrov.

In designing the store, the challenge was to dissolve the boundaries between artificial and natural lighting. With a play of exposing or concealing the customer, the design dissolves the store boundaries and suggests the possibility of other spaces behind the distinct ones.
The glass screens developed are all produced in a different way, offering different perceptual effects - mirrors, projection screens, paravents, and light-reflectors provide backgrounds which echo and prompt movement. The glass screens, like sunglasses, suggest discretion, at the same time creating extreme exposure.
While the ground floor dissolves boundaries through using layers of transparency, the basement uses opaque and reflective surfaces to create fragmented spaces.

The lighting concept by the architects is based on several different light sources utilizing the protocols DALI, DMX512, 10-1V, and DSI among others. Various light scenes are staged at different times of day and night. The lighting is always changing in a subtle, gradual wave form. To fit this difficult lighting design, the different light protocols had to be connected via DMX. The light scenes are programmed on an interface, which allows calling the different scenes time controlled or on demand.
